Week of 10/1-10/5

Dear parents,
I would like to thanks the parents for the Oreo cookies for the phases of the moon project.  We had enough Oreos, and the students had a lot of fun doing it!

I have been working on a way to make the Chinese homework easier for the parents to follow.  Over the next week or 2, I will be changing the Chinese homework around a little bit, and hopefully this helps the parents.

This week I am sending a Parent’s Guide home for Chinese with 2 parts.  The first part has I can read, and the second part has I can write.  The part that says I can read is for the students to learn how to read characters out of the text book.  The second part is for the Chinese characters that the students need to learn how to write for the test on Friday.

Sunday, September 30th , is the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.  There will be a full moon that night, and hopefully you can do something Chinese to celebrate this Chinese holiday!

This week we are talking about Clouds.

In Chinese we are working in lesson 8.

Week of 9/24-9/28

We started Chinese Lesson 8 last week. If you would like to review the stroke order with you child, you can click on the Stroke Order tab in this class blog.  All of the Chinese characters are listed.  You just need to click on the link next to the character, and it will take you to the character.  Then click on this button:

Then click on this button.

Your children can follow the animation showing them the correct stroke order.
If you want to hear the sound for the Chinese character, click on the icon next to the Pinyin.  It looks like these 2 buttons:

The dot means there is more than one pronunciation for the character.  This depends on where the Chinese character is used.

I posted the math vocabulary cards in the Skydrive homework folder for 9-21-12.  If you would like to study them with your child.  This does not need to be turned in with homework.

We will be talking about the moon phases this week because the Chinese Moon Festival is on September 30th.  We will also have other activities pertaining to the Chinese Moon Festival.

Week 3

Dear parents,

Last Friday we took our Chinese and Math tests. The students did a good job overall. Please take some time to check with your child what they have done in class and encourage them to keep up their good work.

Some parents were not sure what they should go over with their children at home.  The main thing is to practice writing the characters and understanding the correct pronunciation.  We do not focus on the pinyin in the younger grades because the state feels it will confuse the students while they are also trying to learn English.  We also do not want the students rely on pinyin to recognize the Chinese character.  The pinyin is helpful when the parents need to help them study at home.

Here are some instructions on how to access the Singapore text website.  This is so you will be able to review our Chinese lessons online, at home.

A list will drop down, and select this part.

A new screen will come up. Select this button.
